There is nothing about waffles that deserves the name waffles. Well, sure "waffle" probably describes the pattern of indentation on the surface of the cooked batter. Almost definitely the reason.
My waffles are shaped like a collection of hearts joined at the tip. Symbolically, but with out reason I tear each heart from its whole, then rent each heart in half. When I eat waffles I am reenacting a cliche of lovelorn despair, heartbreak, which I then devour. My stomach, filled with twelve torn hearts feels no different than if it were filled with twelve circular pancakes.
But the symbolism. Filling my gut with the symbol of love lost, what does that symbolize? Maybe nothing. Maybe this is how you destroy cliches, symbols, metaphors, similies, or anything that hints towards something bigger.
You eat it.
